CORUMBAU | BAHIA | BRAZIL
The Discovery Coast, as the region of the southern coast of Bahia near Monte Pascoal is known, is one of the best-kept treasures among the beaches of Bahia. On this stretch of coast, between the villages of Caraíva and Cumuruxatiba, is Corumbau, which in the Tupi-Guarani language means “far from everything”. Corumbau is considered one of the most preserved beaches on the Bahian coast and is among the most beautiful and peaceful in Brazil. Corumbau is the ideal destination for those who want quality rest, on deserted beaches and lush seas, and a complete disconnect from the hustle and bustle of big city life.
The Corumbau Marine Extractive Reserve has kilometers of beaches with fine white sand and a sea with waters ranging from light green to turquoise blue. Ponta de Corumbau beach is the most visited by tourists who come from Caraíva to spend the day. However, walking 15 minutes south, you will come across a long stretch of sand, with calm and crystal clear sea, which is almost
always deserted and that goes all the way to the cliffs of Corumbau. Vila Naiá is located on the best stretch of this deserted and very peaceful beach.
Still at Ponta do Corumbau, next to the river, small boats anchored on the beach signal the location of the micro-village of Ponta do Corumbau, with no streets, simple houses and the small church of São Francisco. It is in this place that, at low tide, you will find the stunning and long strip of sand that goes into the sea and forms a peninsula, which gave rise to the name Ponta de Corumbau.
The difficult access to Corumbau Beach helps to maintain its old-timey feel, when the beaches were occupied only by fishing villages and almost all year round by locals. There are no crowds of tourists, large hotels or clusters of tents on the sand. What reigns in Corumbau is tranquility and the movement of the tide, which takes and brings that little bit of sand in an eternal game, and mesmerizes the few tourists who wander there.
